Company Directors and PSCs can voluntarily verify their identity from 8 April 2025 Dannie Rees, Carolyn Rossiter 4 April 2025 Share New legislation means that Company Directors and People with Significant Control (PSCs) will have a legal requirement to verify their identity with Companies House from Autumn 2025. Voluntary Identity Verification opens from 8 April 2025 From 8 April 2025, individual directors and PSCs will be able to voluntarily verify their identity in advance of the changes becoming mandatory from Autumn (we are still waiting for Companies House to confirm an exact date). If you do not verify, you will not be able to make any filings with Companies House and your agent will not be able to make any filings on your behalf. Companies House will be issuing financial penalties and/or fines for non-compliance. How to verify your identity You will be able to verify directly with Companies House through GOV.UK One Login, which is a free service. There are three ways to prove your identity with GOV.UK One Login: The method you use will depend on your device, if you have photo ID, and what type of photo ID it is. GOV.UK One Login will ask you some simple questions to find the best way for you to verify your identity online. Depending on your answers, you will then be guided to verify using a GOV.UK mobile phone app or in your web browser. Create your GOV.UK One Login or sign in - GOV.UK One Login With the GOV.UK ID Check app You will need one of the following types of photo ID: UK photocard driving licence UK passport non-UK passport with a biometric chip UK biometric residence permit (BRP) UK biometric residence card (BRC) UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP) By answering security questions online You will have to answer some security questions about things like your mobile phone contract, and any bank accounts, credit cards, loans or mortgages you may have. You also need to enter details from one of the following: UK passport UK photocard driving licence a current account with a UK bank or building society At a Post Office You will be asked to: enter details from your photo ID on GOV.UK go to a Post Office that offers ‘in branch verification’, where they will scan your photo ID and take a photo of you. You will get an email about the result of your identity check - usually within a day of going to the Post Office. You will need one of the following types of photo ID: UK passport non-UK passport UK photocard driving licence European Union (EU) photocard driving licence/national identity photocard from an EU country, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein What to do if you can’t use the GOV.UK One Login service If you aren't able to use any of the above methods, you will be able to use an Authorised Corporate Services Provider (ACSP) to complete the verification checks, however there may be a charge for this service. What happens when you verify? When you have successfully verified, you will get your unique Companies House personal code. The code is personal to you, not your company or a company you work for. Make sure you keep this code secure and only share it with people you trust. If you are currently a director or a PSC, you will need to use your Companies House personal code to connect your verified identity to the records held at Companies House.
