Moore (South) LLP staff slip on their running shoes, for the Ellen MacArthur Trust

Sue Lucas

On the 23rd October, 7 members of the Moore (South) LLP team, slipped on their running shoes to take part in the gruelling Great South Run, a 10 mile road race that welcomes beginner runners, to famous athletes.

This year, Moore (South) LLP runners consisted of Brian Barnard, Claire Grace, Matt Bather, Andrew Tanner, Toby Rumsey, Chris Lucas and Vicky Drayton.

The Great South Run was an excellent opportunity for the firm to support The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. They are a nationwide organisation, which aims to rebuild confidence in young people who have suffered from Cancer and Leukaemia through sailing. Those who participate have often spent long periods in hospital and have low self-esteem as well as missing out on large parts of their childhood.

The Trust organises four-day sailing trips on Yachts in the Solent during the summer holidays and focuses on them working together as a team in addition to taking part in duties on board. After the initial trip they are invited back annually to take part in other sailing events until they are 18, and may return as volunteers beyond this age.

The Great South Run starts and finishes in Southsea and features a fast and flat 10-mile course that has been graced by world-class athletes such as Liz McColgan, Paula Radcliffe, Sonia O’Sullivan and Mo Farah, who won the men’s race in 2009.

The event gives participants the unique opportunity to run through Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, passing iconic landmarks such as HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose Museum and the Moore (South) LLP runners said the following on their participation in the Great South Run:

“The great south run was a great experience, the atmosphere from when you first walk into the area to running past the bands playing in the street. The Ten mile run is the furthest I have ever run and it was great to raise money for the trust.” – Toby Rumsey

‘This was the 5th time I have run the Great South Run, and I was delighted to achieve a new personal best of 1 hour and 17 minutes exactly. It was a beautiful sunny day in Portsmouth. The crowds of supporters around the course really motivate and keep you going. I’m very proud to have raised money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.’ – Claire Grace

“I am not a seasoned runner like the rest of the MS team, so for me it was the atmosphere of the event that kept me going throughout the 10 miles. Unfortunately, I was suffering with a slight injury during the run so didn’t get a PB this year, but upon reaching the finish line you can not help feeling proud of the accomplishment and for raising money for such a fantastic charity.” – Vicky Drayton

“Sunday was a great day for me as the running conditions were perfect which enabled me to achieve my personal best, all the training in the gym paid off.  And I even made channel 5” - Brian Barnard

The team raised £1,053.75 including Gift Aid for the Ellen MacArthur trust.
