Charities: are you ready for GDPR?

Nick Simkins

Widely dubbed as the “biggest shake up of data protection laws for 20 years”, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will apply from 25 May 2018 for any organisation that holds or processes any EU personal data – charities included!

As charities, you will have information on members registered with your charity, for which you will require consent. Much of your money will come from donors and sponsors, of whom you will also most likely hold personal data including email addresses. As such, you need to prepare now to ensure you don’t lose the money that’s vital to your organisation.

The Government outlined its plans last week, confirming that penalties of up to €20 million (£17 million) or four percent of annual global turnover, whichever is greater, will be applied if organisations fail to comply with new data protection laws. Some cases may even be investigated as a criminal offence. And as charities are set to be high on the radar of the Independent Commissioner's Office (ICO) - the UK regulator – you won’t want to leave it too late!
