Mirror Wills are a pair of Wills that mirror each other, usually made by married couples or long-term partners. Each person sets out their wishes in the same way and names the same beneficiaries.
Most couples choose to leave everything to each other first, so when one partner dies, the surviving partner receives the entire estate. Because both Wills list the same beneficiaries, the intention is that, when the second partner passes away, the estate will then pass on to the people you’ve both agreed should inherit your combined assets.
This type of Will works well when a couple has shared wishes and fairly simple circumstances. For instance, a married couple with children might leave everything to each other initially, and then name their children as the ultimate beneficiaries.
It’s a good idea to review your Will from time to time to ensure it continues to meet your current wishes. It is generally recommended that your review your Will at least once every five years.
You should also review your Will when your circumstances change, for example when you get married or divorced, buy property or have children.
You will also need to update your Will if someone named in the Will passes away. You may also wish to review your Will if your financial situation changes or if there are changes in the inheritance tax rules which may impact on your estate.
