Will I need to pay back the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) grant?

Support for the self-employed has been given through the SEISS Grants 1, 2 and 3 for 2020/21 and will be given for 2021/22 through SEISS Grants 4 & 5.

Furlough Scheme - Latest Deadlines & Information

January Claims
Submissions for January furlough claims can now be made. The deadline for claims is Monday 15 February.

If possible, it is best to submit claims once you are sure of the exact number of hours employees will be working to prevent having to amend your claim later on. However, you can make a claim before, during or after you process your payroll.

Coronavirus - VAT Deferral Scheme Extended until March 2022

HMRC have announced that businesses who deferred VAT payments between 20 March and 30 June 2020 and still have payments to make can opt into the new VAT deferral payment scheme when it launches later this year.

The new scheme will be available in early 2021. You must opt in yourself; your agent cannot do this for you.

The Government only confirmed that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) would be extended to 2 December at the end of October in response to the new lockdown restrictions, but it has already taken the unprecedented step of extending it further until the end of March 2021 for all parts of the UK.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), which was due to end on 31 October, will now be extended, with the UK government paying 80% of wages for the hours furloughed employees do not work, up to a cap of £2,500 for periods from 1 November.

Self Employed Grant

The Government has announced an increase to the amount of profits covered by the two forthcoming self-employed grants from 20 per cent to 40 per cent, meaning the maximum grant will increase from £1,875 to £3,750.

Business Grants

The Chancellor has announced approved additional funding to support cash grants of up to £2,100 per month primarily for businesses in the hospitality, accommodation and leisure sector who may be adversely impacted by the restrictions in high-alert level areas. These grants will be available retrospectively for areas who have already been subject to restrictions and come on top of higher levels of additional business support for Local Authorities moving into Tier 3 which, if scaled up across the country, would be worth more than £1 billion.

Employers will be able to apply for the Job Retention Bonus (JRB) between 15 February 2021 and 31 March 2021.

As of June 2020, 9.1 million jobs have been furloughed at a cost of £20.8 billion. The government is proposing a new Bill to allow them to investigate those who have claimed from the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and other income related support schemes and grants. The Bill would enable HMRC to prosecute those guilty of fraud or over claiming from these schemes.

Self-employed Income Support Scheme

If you're self-employed or a member of a partnership and have been adversely affected by coronavirus (COVID-19) you may be able to use the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme to claim a taxable grant of 80% of your average monthly trading profits, paid out in a single instalment covering 3 months, and capped at £7,500 altogether. This is a temporary scheme, but it may be extended.

REGISTER NOW TO AVOID PAYMENT DELAY ONCE HMRC PORTAL IS LIVE: In the latest guidance released on the job retention scheme, employers are warned that they need to have an HMRC PAYE online services account to make their claims for the grant when the online portal is launched at the end of April 2020.

Working from home: What CAN you claim for?

The working from home rules haven’t changed but are certainly more relevant than ever as larger numbers of employees are required to work from home due to the Covid19 pandemic. HMRC has confirmed that if you have to work at home on a regular basis you are entitled to claim tax relief. If you simply choose to work from home no relief is available.
