Tax Trainee

Working in a team of four the tax trainee is involved in providing tax services to both corporate and personal tax clients. 

Core responsibilities

  • With appropriate guidance and support, be prepared to learn to draft tax returns for individuals, partnerships and sole traders
  • Prepare corporation tax returns
  • Deal  with HMRC correspondence including reviewing/preparing letters for review
  • Build and maintain good working relationships with clients and colleagues within the firm
  • Communicate with clients to obtain relevant information or to resolve queries, deal with client due diligence and other compliance matters  
  • Ensure deadlines are met and that issues or difficulties that arise are brought to the attention of the senior team members; and keep senior team members up to date with progress of work
  • Develop a knowledge of UK and other taxation matters; research and problem solve by using HMRC manuals, tax legislation and other material in addition to seeking advice from more senior members of the department
  • Work with our tax software, CCH
  • Work with the practice management software, APS
  • Save all correspondence with clients in the document management system, Virtual Cabinet
  • Develop knowledge of double entry and bookkeeping skills
  • Develop soft skills for communicating with clients
  • Follow instructions of tax associate
  • Work as part of a team to achieve deadlines


  • Study towards the relevant tax qualification – ATT or CTA
  • Balance studies and working full time with generous study leave provided by the firm.


  • Must be able to live and work in the UK.
  • At least 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 with a 6 or above in English Language and Maths (or equivalent)
  • Competent knowledge of the Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to deliver accurate work to deadlines and under pressure
  • Demonstrate a commitment to delivering a first class service to clients, and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent customer service and communications skills, both written and verbally
  • Time management skills including prioritising
  • Willingness to assist in other departments when required
