Graduate trainees have an essential role in the workflow and development of the firm. 

Core responsibilities

  • With appropriate guidance and support, be prepared to learn to draft working papers to support the preparation of accounts for sole traders and small limited companies, including:
    • ○ Production of lead schedules to agree to accounts disclosures
    • ○ Production and reconciliation of control accounts
    • ○ Collation of appropriate evidence to support figures in the accounts
    • ○ Drafting sole trader/company tax computation
    • ○ Raising relevant and coherent queries to assist with supervisor/manager review
  • Assist with audit field work (often attending clients’ premises) including:
    • ○ Completing statutory sections of audit file
    • ○ Making detailed system notes
    • ○ Journal testing
    • ○ Preparing trial balance and identifying errors in basic accounting
    • ○ Income and expenses testing, payroll testing, stock testing
    • ○ Bank and cash testing
    • ○ Assisting in preparing comprehensive working papers
  • Work with our accounts software, CCH, and audit software, ProAudit
  • Work with the practice management software, APS and Virtual Cabinet
  • Work with different accounting software packages including Sage, Quickbooks, Xero
  • Save all correspondence with clients in the document management system
  • Develop knowledge of double entry and bookkeeping skills
  • Develop soft skills for communicating with clients
  • Follow instructions of audit senior
  • Work as part of a team to achieve deadlines


  • Study towards the relevant accountancy qualification – ACCA or ACA
  • Balance studies and working full time with generous study leave provided by the firm.


  • Must be able to live and work in the UK
  • At least 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 with a 6 or above in English Language and Maths (or equivalent)
  • At least 3 A levels at grade B or equivalent
  • At least a grade 2:1 in any undergraduate degree or equivalent.  The relevant fields of study are:
    • ○ Accounting and/or finance
    • ○ Business focussed degree if combined with an accounting or finance module
    • ○ Chemistry
    • ○ Economics
    • ○ Engineering
    • ○ Maths
    • ○ Medicine
    • ○ Physics
    • ○ Statistics
    • ○ A combination of the above
  • Competent knowledge of the Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to deliver accurate work to deadlines and under pressure
  • Demonstrate a commitment to delivering a first class service to clients, and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent customer service and communications skills, both written and verbally
  • Time management skills including prioritising
  • Willingness to assist in other departments when required
  • A driving licence and access to transport is beneficial as the majority of the audits are conducted at the client’s premises.
